THE ANGELS OF CHRISTMAS – BY Lorelie Olson

HARK THE HERALD ANGELS SING!

Hark the Herald Angels Sing! sang my fourth grade chorus of us girls dressed as angels with white cardboard wings.  That was the beginning of my lifelong fascination with Christmas angels.  This fascination  continued during college years and throughout my life, as I received angel ornaments  from friends and family, or found unusual angels to buy for myself.

Angels still figure prominently in our Christmas decor at home.  At least one small tree in each home features angel ornaments collected over many years, and each one has a story.  As I place an angel on a tree or arrange a special angel display, I try to remember its story.  Who gave it to me?  When or where did I find this particular angel?

On the cabin tree I place a small Hawaiian angel with a red tapa cloth dress, burlap wings, and a seed lei – a stocking gift from one of our Maui Christmases.  Toward the top of the tree are small white painted walnut angels holding tiny song books, made many years ago by a friend.

On the coffee table  is an angelic trio: two angels given to me by my “secret” pal in college, and a music box from Tim on a long ago Christmas Eve. On the buffet I place my “choir” of angels as part of a nativity scene; these have been  purchased by us over many years, and used to  have their home on our entry display shelves in Richmond Beach.

Three of my angels remind me of thoughtful friendships. The angel music box  was made especially for me by a creative friend, and two Hawaiian angels  were given as reminders of our many Maui Christmases.

My most special angel is playing a wind-chime harp, and lives in our Ponderosa garden most of the year; she is moved inside in winter.  Although she was a birthday surprise from Tim, my harper angel has joined the others  as a reminder of the special place angels have in my heart during the year and especially during the Christmas season.

  1. In most of the religions of the world angels play a role. In the Bible there is mention of them going between heaven and earth. From that some believe they can be a way to communicate between the living and those who have passed. I like to think so.
