BEACH WALKS AT YAQUINA BAY, OREGON – by Lorelie Olson

In spring the scenic Oregon Coast beckons us to Newport to visit friends Jim and Elletta, who have a home and guest cabin with ocean views and access.

ARRIVAL AT THE BEACH

On a cool but sunny day we exit the highway and slowly drive down a narrow private road then up a driveway, which overlooks the ocean.  We settle into the cabin with its views of the beach and Yaquina Light house, then join our friends for sunset supper.

A BEACH WALK TOWARD THE LIGHTHOUSE

The next morning tide is perfect for a beach walk so we decide to head south toward the lighthouse. The path to the beach is bordered by blooming pink sea thrift, and we pick our way carefully over the rocks to the damp hard sand.  At the south end of the beach we can sit on big rocks to watch the seagulls.  Tim scans the horizon hoping to catch a fishing boat or a cruising sailboat when they crest and then disappear in the ocean swells.

A WALK TO MOOLACK BEACH

Another morning, another beach walk, this time heading north to Moolack Beach, before the tide comes in and we can’t get around a point to reach the cabin.  There are huge rock formations in this beach area, and we find interesting “holes”” and shapes emerging from the damp sand.  One jutting shape reminded me of a whale!

DEPARTURE

A big thank you to our hosts and good-by for now!
