PATRICIA ANN HAMMILL – POET – “LITTLE BIRDS”

I started writing poetry when I was nine years old.  My mother had friends who were poets, my aunts wrote poetry, and I had wonderful teachers in school who not only wrote poetry but promoted poetry. Also, I had friends who enjoyed “playing with words.” Writing poetry seemed natural.

Many of my themes deal with nature; however, I also have written about issues concerning the range of human experience, including joy, love, and desperation. I also write children’s poetry and songs for children. Coupling my poems with my drawings and paintings gives me great pleasure.

LITTLE BIRDS

I love these little birds who come.

They ask for nothing, not a crumb.

They dine on bugs and tiny seeds,

And lounge on limbs or dance in weeds.

They sing and chatter and refuse

To leave until they’ve heard the news

About the entire neighborhood.

I’d join in, if I only could!

But they have better things to do,

And soon they chirp, “Farewell, Adieu!”

So I watch them, one by one,

Depart for home; the day is done.

I feel no sadness, neither sorrow,

I know my friends will be back tomorrow!
