DAVE WAGAR – WRITER/POET – “LURKING” – A POEM

Introduction to LURKING

According to Dave, much of his writing “is based in memories, often randomly strung together as they come to me.” In addition to memories, Dave’s writing is based on close observation of nature and insights coming from reflections on life’s experiences.

LURKING

I know that under that wet rock

a crab is lurking, waiting for the tide.

Today I will not stoop to flip the rock —

             the crab scrambling desperately.

Once I would have flipped and flipped.

I’d shout, “Here’s one!  And here, too!  Look!”

More hands would come to flip the rocks —

             crabs scurrying frantically.

Today it is enough to know it’s there —

               a crab sheltering snugly —

to know that while I love to look,

the crab is lurking to live.

  1. Love it! The poem vividly brings back memories. I like the similarity in the last lines of the first three verses and the alliteration in the last two lines of the last verse.

The poem hints at aging as well–the eagerness to flip, and then the contentment of knowing without flipping.

Really a good little poem, Dave.
