Near the beginning of the twentieth century, Rasmus and Engel came to America, settled down to farm and had eight children. Since Engel and Rasmus are my grandparents, I am looking at my aunts, uncles and cousins. How and where they lived their lives has had a direct impact on who I am today.
The Christmas season is a wonderful time to reflect upon and to be grateful to those who came before us and contributed to who we are and the way we live our lives.
A special thanks to Tomi who provided several of the photos in this post.

JEG ER SO GLAD
I am so glad on Christmas Eve,
The night before Jesus’ birth;
For then the star shone like the sun
And angels sang on earth
The Engel and Rasmus Olson family might have sung this traditional carol in Norwegian on Christmas Eve in 1913 in a Norwegian church in Iowa. Our lives in many ways have dramatically changed since those farming days. Still, our lives are connected to theirs and the changes may be less than we imagine them to be.
