CATHY ROSS -POET – “HYACINTHS BENEATH THE SNOW”

A Pacific Northwest native, I have been writing poetry over 40 years.  My poems reflect a woman’s journey through the later years, with recurring themes of loss and renewal.

HYACINTHS BENEATH THE SNOW

Cathy Ross

The cold continues.

I grow desperate.

Frantic for green

I take to forcing

bulbs in china bowls,

pretending plastic leaves

are alive.  Still winter’s ice

creeps down the walls,

all is frozen, silent dead.

By day

I search for hyacinths

beneath the snow,

by night

I steal down

to the lake, light candles

in the fallen pine cones,

set them burning on the water,

watch their small defiant fires

floating in the dark.

Peefectly captures my feelings in the long Plain winters!
In Seattle I always felt hope when the Primroses popped up around Valentine’s Day.

The underlying theme comes out loud and clear -“light and life” are unstoppable forces in the world.
