Along with the flowers of early spring, the return of the robins, swallows, chickadees, varied thrushes and many other birds brighten and lighten our lives with their presence and songs. Although starlings are not our favorite birds, Cathy’s poem takes us into the mystery of the choreography of the thousands of starlings filling the sky.
MURMURATION
A dark swarm
smudges the sky,
the starlings have returned.
They swirl above the horizon
like billowing smoke,
swelling in pulses
like waves of cheers
rippling through a stadium.
I watch as they disperse,
compress, diverge
and merge again
with elegant precision,
as synchronized as Blue Angels.
Moments later, they turn
and plunge as one,
then veer left and disappear,
their images still tangled
in the net of my mind.
