JAPANESE GARDEN ELEMENTS

Lee and Roger invite you to join them at Pt. Defiance Park for a serene garden walk that gives a sense of retreat and opportunities for visual and poetic reflections.

The Pt. Defiance Japanese garden features elements of nature that reflect traditional religious philosophies and inspire peaceful contemplation.  Rocks, stones, and water features enhance simple plantings of trees, shrubs, and grasses.  Symbolic elements include a welcoming torii gate, lanterns, and bridges to encourage leisurely walks.

HAIKU

Japanese poets have long been inspired by nature, and a traditional form of poetry has been haiku, a seventeen-syllable vignette which calls upon the reader to experience personal responses and appreciate subtle meanings. Many of these small poems are focused on subjects like water and seasonal blossoms.

Riverbank plum- tree

Do your reflected blossoms

Really flow away?

Buson

Clear-colored stones are

Vibrating in the brook beds . . .

Or the water is.

Soseki

Over my shoulder . . .

My friends who followed me were

Lost in clouds of blossom.
