I am currently reading Margaret Atwood’s book of essays, BURNING QUESTIONS. One essay focuses on a Polish journalist, R. Kapuscinski, who covered dangerous places and events in his career. Despite this he continued to express optimism about the future. He wrote, “We stand in darkness, surrounded by light.” Although I wrote DO TELL ME in the nineteen- seventies, the themes remain timeless!
DO TELL ME
Do not tell me
How Awful
Christmas is commercialized.
Do not tell me
How Awful
Christ is left out of Xmas
Do not tell me
How Awful
Christmas is worrying and worrying.
Do not tell me
How Awful
Christmas is January bills.
Do tell me – –
The bon fires still burn brightly on the blackest night;
The earth bears green in the bitter cold;
Lively smiles lighten a leaden sky;
Wool and wine warm wind chilled souls;
Do tell me – –
We survive to seek a new spring!
