“ROSELYN” PATTERN – A POEM ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY HEIRLOOM CHINA? – BY Cathy Ross

A Pacific Northwest native, I have been writing poetry over 40 years.  My poems reflect a woman’s journey through the later years, with recurring themes of loss and renewal.

I have  read at many local poetry venues and am a member of Seattle Poets Table. My first book, If the Moon Came Out Only Once a Month, was published in 2012 and my current book, What the Tulips Said, was published this year.

ROSELYN

Cathy Ross

An empty plate

sits on my dining table,

Roselyn by Lenox,

my wedding pattern,

the flower in the center

still scarlet, the gold leaf

on the edges a little worn.

We’ve eaten together

for sixty years now,

and I’ve loved

seeing all twelve of you

around my dining table,

reflecting candlelight,

echoing laughter,

shimmering with love

and gravy.

Where will you go

when I am gone?

Will someone take you in

and look after you?

Or will you be discarded,

given to an unknown thrift store?

I see your future, like mine,

suspended in time,

a blank slate,

an empty palette,
