“FROG SONGS” – A Poem by Cathy Ross About pacific Tree Frogs

Cathy’s poems are always a welcome addition to the NESTER, and FROG SONGS continues the NESTER’S  emphasis on the significance and the beauty of the earth.  In several of Cathy’s poems, the poet begins with a description of nature and then turns to a personal response to what she observes. The observation and contemplation of nature connects and adds meaning to the poet’s life! – Tim

FROG SONGS

Cathy Ross

We have lots of frogs in our pond

bright green with tiny spots

Pacific tree frogs, no bigger

than a thumb, they sing

on spring evenings

their voices echoing

across the meadow

like the call and response

of a gospel preacher

Who loves me? God loves me

Who is saved? We are saved.

or children in a swimming pool

Marco – Polo – Marco – Polo

or shamans in Africa

Hakuna – Matata – Hakuna – Matata

Their cadence comforts me,

no question goes unanswered,

unlike ones that rise

from humans everywhere,

sometimes out loud,

sometimes without words.

See me? I see you

Hear me? I hear you

Love me? I love you.

I sit down on the grass

hug my knees to my chest

and listen.
