“A CHAIR IN THE SUN” A POEM BY NAN HARTY

Nan Harty has written poetry for over twenty years with themes of  nature,  place, and people. A “community poet” with something to say quietly in concert with poets who gather and share in libraries, and bookstores, and living rooms all over the Northwest. She is a member of Poets Table in Seattle. She has published a book of poems, THE TELLING OF THE TREES.

Lorelie and I are pleased to invite you to read “A Chair in the Sun”. For us, the poems “Sometimes I Just Sits” and “A Chair in the Sun” carry special meaning at this time of year when the days are shorter and the sun is lower on the the horizon. On our deck we often move a chair to find that one spot still in full sun.

I’m 86 and still a walker – a stroller more than a strider.  “A Chair in the Sun” has a special meaning for me.  Sometimes on my walks I need to sit down and I am grateful for an empty chair in full sun.  I catch my breath and  listen to what passes by or flies over me. Nan’s poem reminds me of that . . . .

A CHAIR IN THE SUN

Nan Harty

A chair in the sun, whether

wooden Adirondack,

old rusty red meshed metal,

and vacant

is a chair which is always a welcome

more than a smile

more than a handshake or a hug

a sunny chair is there for just one thing

to bask

in a moment and a place

while

planes move through overhead blue

others going

others gone.
