INTRODUCTION
A most welcome and timely poem arrived this morning from Cathy Ross, a poet with three previously published poems for us.
Six inches of snow fell yesterday to add a brilliant white to the final days of autumn red in our row of sumacs. Cathy gave us our first sumac that doesn’t miss an hour during the growing season in stating yet another sumac!
From Cathy Ross:
“A Pacific Northwest native, I have been writing poetry over 40 years. My poems reflect a woman’s journey through the later years, with recurring themes of loss and renewal.
I have read at many local poetry venues and am a member of Seattle Poets Table. My first book, If the Moon Came Out Only Once a Month, was published in 2012 and my current book, What the Tulips Said, was published this year. ”
The Hour
Autumn
has put on
her crimson hat,
and it is time
for me to claim
the hour I set aside
last spring
when clocks
sprang forward
to save light.
Sixty minutes,
time enough
for choices to be made
for journeys to begin.
One slice of a day,
time enough
to mend a quarrel
to make a promise.
One forgotten hour
and I’ve come to take it back,
to hold it
like a new-found coin,
then spend it
with intention,
as if it were
a gift.

Cathy, we have never met but your poem is beautiful. Simple, meaningful imagery, a lovely metaphor leaves me thinking of the meaning and importance of time.
