DAVID WAGAR – PAINTER/POET – “GREEN FIRE”

A holiday greeting from Dave & Joyce Wagar
“We spent July and August on our Whidbey Island beach place this year.
One of our favorite off-beach walks is the Wilbert Trail at South Whidbey State Park, only four miles away. The trail stars a remarkable stand of old growth firs and cedars, with an abundant supporting cast of native vegetation. The scene in Dave’s painting is from a walk on a partly sunny day in July.

Green Fire

Above the musty shadows of the woods,

a darkening cloudbank drifts away,

spilling a skyful of sun-fire.

With needled branches high above the ground,

the old-growth giants snare the fire they need,

scattering green-hot scraps of flame below,

kindling the fire of life

Flaming leaves cascade between the trees.

Torching fern beds light the forest floor.

      Sparkling bushes brighten rotting logs.

Sizzling horsetails scorch the muddy flats.

Glowing mosses shine from rocks and trunks.

Green fire rages through the wakened woods…

A darkening cloudbank drifts across,

blocking a skyful of sun-fire.

Green flames flicker out.

Yet in the musty shadows of the grove

each leaf and frond and needle holds a spark

to kindle green-fire when the sun returns.

                                                                            -DEW
