LILACS SUFFUSE OLSONS’ GARDENS WITH MULTI-COLORED, FRAGRANT, VIBRANT BLOOMS IN MAY

Welcome Friends,

Enter the display of tall lilacs in the Olsons’ gardens. Look up to see the breeze moving flowers and leaves at the top, and look closely at lower blooms to appreciate color, texture, and fragrance! Enjoy the haiku sensory impressions by Maureen Mitchell and contemporary haiku poets, and learn more about these fascinating shrubs!

Colonists brought lilacs from Europe in the 1750’s, and valued them for their long life, fragrance, and symbolism.

Purple lilacs symbolize renewal, new beginnings, and first love – a perfect association  with springtime!

White lilacs represent youth, innocence, spirituality, and protection, and are often used in weddings.

All lilacs attract bees and butterflies, have edible blossoms, and can be used for medicinal purposes.

Lilacs whisper soft,

Spring’s perfumed secrets unfold,

These lovely plants are relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in various climates. They typically bloom in late spring to early summer. One of the best things about lilacs is their intoxicating scent. Their sweet fragrance wafts through the air, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to your garden.

While often  hailed as the “harbinger of spring”, lilacs for us are the fulfillment of spring. The Olsons’ gardens are rooted in the foothills  east of the Cascade Mountains and in the west on the shore of Puget sound. The lilac season stretches from early spring until early summer!

We hope you have enjoyed this immersion in the beauty of lilacs! But something is missing.  The only way to experience the scent of lilacs is to be near them and they are “EVERYWHERE”!

Lovely! Lilacs always remind me of the Lilac Festival every spring in Spokane when I was a kid. The fragrance of lilacs filled the air.

I love this in depth look at lilacs that you created Lorelie!
My mom’s birthday was May 15 and these are one of the flowers that always make me think of her.
