Welcome and thank you for returning to Wallace Island with us. You will share in the early years of this “once in a lifetime” experience.  In many ways we were like the children – everything was new and wondrous!

WALLACE ISLAND'S ENCHANTMENT

David Conover, previous owner of Wallace Island and author of ONCE UPON AN ISLAND says, “Since time immemorial man has suffered from island fever – the longing to live simply, quietly, fully, on a dab of land surrounded by sea, sky and trees.”

Is this a summary of our romantic dream about Wallace Island?

SETTLING IN . . .

After our long journey to Wallace, we unloaded the launch and began a trek with our supplies to our reserved cabins. With our caretaker to guide us, we walked by his home and met his wife and daughter. Then it was an uphill climb to our cabins.  We began to settle in with our young families anticipating the island’s pleasures and activities.

THE CABINS

Our caretaker had prepared the cabins for us, including instructions for use. We immediately saw a sign over the toilet that stated:

“In this land

Of fun and sun

We don’t flush

for number one”

A clear message about water restrictions! another sign reminded us that the generator would be shut down by 10:00PM. Lights out!

ADULT ACTIVITIES

High on the “activity” list was just relaxing, but playing, boating, walking and fishing were favorites too.

  1. What a delight. This inspired me to collect our pictures of our time at Black Butte with wonderful friends and our young children. There is nothing like vacationing together to cement friendships – or not
