CATHY ROSS – POET – “PLANTING TOMATOES IN THE RAIN” – A POEM FOR SPRING

A Pacific Northwest native, I have been writing poetry over 40 years.  My poems reflect a woman’s journey through the later years, with recurring themes of loss and renewal.

on my knees

soaking wet on the south side

of the house.,

I tip them

from their pots,

breathe in the smell

of compost with its

dead debris, promise

they will flourish

this year, not turn

pale and shed their fruit

for lack of sun,

tuck them gently in their beds,

rain drips from

feathered leaves,

I pinch away

the lowest ones

before I set them

in the ground,

new roots will grow

from these fresh wounds.
