If what you need to learn
is perseverance
watch the heron as he waits
against the salmon dawn.
see how he stares
across the bay, his body
hunched and motionless
his feathers ruffling in the wind,
webbed wings folded back
compressed energy ready
to explode, like the pulsing power
that lies dormant in your breast,
what stops you, who has said
you cannot suddenly take flight
plunge headfirst
into the white-capped sea,
be swallowed by the icy depths
and then, with a piercing cry,
burst into the air
with your silver prize?
