AN “OCTOBER FEST” OF SIGHTS – by Lorelie Olson

October provides nature’s final burst of seasonal colors from the translucent yellow of the Eastern Red Bud Tree to the flaming red of the Burning Bush.  And the anticipation of witches and goblins at Halloween on October 31.

We invite you to view a photographic potpourri to celebrate the many facets of this season in home and garden!

SALMON SUMMERS VIII – “MAKING IT” – By Tim Olson

After four seasons working on a fish tender brailing salmon from traps and seiners, I was ready for a change.  I wanted to go fishing!  Knowing which skippers caught the most fish. I rented an apartment from a “Highliner” in Ballard and asked for a “chance” every month when I paid the rent.

When Walt’s experienced sixteen year skiffman  decided to skipper his own seiner, Walt hired me. I had a lot to learn.

OLSON GARDENS XII – ART IN THE GARDENS – Photo Credits: Lorelie Olson, Toni Olson & Lynda Woltring

During  many of our garden tours and visits we were impressed by the garden art that enhanced the plantings and appeared integral to the garden itself.

We were motivated to incorporate our own versions of garden art, first in the large Shady Grove country garden, then in the much smaller Everett garden.

We invite you to view these sculptures of glass, metal, wood, and concrete, as they and their plant companions provide an engaging visual treat.

Dave Wagar – WRITER/POET – “KEITH’S TOYS” – A POEM

The Birthday
Twenty years ago, we were invited to Keith Biever’s 65th birthday party. Joyce and I decided to make him a card that related toys to various times and events in his life. We shopped for toys, and I composed a little verse to go with them. I was asked to read it aloud at the party. It’s the kind of rhyme that begs to be read aloud.
Keith and the partygoers listened and chuckled appreciatively. I thought that was the end of it. The next time I visited K and K, there was that birthday greeting in the bathroom, framed, and displayed with the toys. It was still there the last time I looked. Maybe it’s time to bring it out of the bathroom and share it again. I’ve added a coda without toys for the 20 years since.
For Keith, in appreciation for sixty years of friendship and adventure. –DW

SPIRITLIFTERS VI – GOLDEN MOMENTS WITH KALA & SANDY

Lorelie and I are delighted to introduce two special Golden Retrievers, Kala and Sandy to you.

Before you enjoy these “Golden Moments” with Sandy and Kala, I will quote poet Stanley Kunitz making a significant point about the life we share with plants and animals:

“There’s something very important to me about having a kind of relationship with plants and animals, that can be transacted wholly without language. The warmth of one’s  body is a form of communication. The stroke of one’s hand is a means of communication . . . I get a sense of reciprocity that is very comforting, consoling. . .

SALMON JOURNEY VII – FREYJA SAILS TO DESOLATION SOUND – LEW & KEN AT THE HELM

Before joining Ken’s, Lew’s, and Freyja’s journey from Edmonds to Desolation Sound, two points need to be made. The first is well known: A boat is the nearest thing to a living being that people can make with their hands.  The second is: When you are at sea for more than three days, the boat and the sea become your world.

Ken’s life wasn’t going all that well when he became a partner in Freyja in 1985. Freyja wasn’t doing all that well either after I returned to commercial fishing in the 1980’s. And so, for a brief few years, Ken together with his friends George and Lew formed a partnership with Freyja and prepped her for Ken and Lew to sail to Desolation Sound.

I am quite certain that when Ken and Lew hoisted the sails in Admiralty Inlet, the breeze filled the sails, Freyja’s hull lifted and took flight with the birds. Perhaps it took less than three days for Freyja’s world to become their world.
