LETTERS FROM ALASKA 8 – “WHAT I’VE BEEN UP TO” By Carole Gibb

In a previous post, many visitors to the NESTER enjoyed Carole Gibb’s seventh letter to her sister Mary. In these excerpts from her memoir FISHING FOR COURAGE, Carole writes letters to Mary describing her challenging experiences fishing and living in Southeastern Alaska’s outback.  In her eighth letter, Carole writes a rousing narrative about an evening in a bar in Pelican, the nearest town to her cabin.

BUTTERFLIES ARE EVERYWHERE – Photographer, Keith Olson

You are invited to join Keith not only in her garden but also on her visits to other destinations to take photographs of butterflies.

In the spring, Keith’s and Jerry’s garden welcomes bees, butterflies and everyone who passes by their home. Perhaps, they pause to enjoy the butterflies fluttering among the flowers. Perhaps, they enter the garden and visit Jerry & Keith, whose camera is always ready to focus on the variety of butterflies adding color and mystery to the garden.

KENNY’S CURE FOR SEASICKNESS – By Jerry Olson

Ken’s birthday is March 11 and every year the NESTER includes a post reminding us all of the significance of Ken’s life to our lives.  Last year, Jerry & Keith contributed a post that chronicled a family cruise on the Christian in 1994. In prior years, Nancy shared a post highlighting her years with Ken on the CHRISTIAN.  Last year, The NESTER published Ken’s poem CALL ME ADVENA KEN.

In Jerry’s humorous post this year we don’t meet the Ken writing poetry, theology and skippering the CHRISTIAN in Southeastern Alaska waters.  We find Ken in his early twenties fishing for salmon off Cape Addington on his 33 foot troller, Lady Fay, with a seasick teenager for crew.  You will enjoy every sentence! You will find yourself telling others  . . . “Don’t miss this post!”

Cathy Ross Poem – “HOW LONG WILL IT KEEP”

I am amused when I read Cathy’s poem HOW LONG WILL IT KEEP – even for a second or third time. Haven’t all of us stopped to take a breath when we look closely at an expiration date of a prescription container, a filet of fish bought at a “REDUCED SALE” cost lingering in the fridge, or a jar of peanut butter that hasn’t been opened in three months?  Will it be perfectly all right, or merely taste bad, or poison me?

Cathy’s poems often take everyday experiences most of us share and then change them in an unexpected direction.  This is one of those poems – you will be pleased that you read it!

Cathy Ross Poem “THE RED PLANET”

The galaxies, the stars, and the planets provide the inspiration for several of Cathy’s poems. The NESTER has featured three of these poems, QUESTIONS FOR THE STARS, LUNAR NEW YEAR, and THE MOON YOU NEVER SEE.  Cathy titled one of her books, IF THE MOON CAME OUT ONLY ONCE A YEAR.

Like many of her poems, in THE RED PLANET it’s important to carefully read the stanzas prior to the final stanza. A twist in content reveals a thought worth pondering after finishing the poem,  and could inspire a second reading.
