KEITH OLSON’S PHOTO GALLERY OF WINTER SNOW IN NORTH CAROLINA

Keith Olson, a North Carolina
resident and a wonderful photographer, shares with you new photos from a cold, snowy winter in the South. We. have added to these, favorite winter scenes from Keith’s past posts in the NESTER.

The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote, “If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?” In March I might add that “Spring is just ahead.”  Actually in North Carolina, spring is already there! Another writer, Lewis Carroll wrote in Alice in Wonderland, “I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, ‘Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.’”

We are pleased to look back for a moment at winter, and then be ready to fully greet the coming of spring.

SE ALASKA “FISHERFOLK” SALMON TROLLERS – LIFE ON THE BOARDWALK

When Alaska fisherfolk have finished a time at sea and the salmon are chilling in the hold, they head for town. They unload, make repairs, renew supplies, tell stories, and spend time with friends and family.

In two previous posts, Hans Weinberg’s marvelous photography revealed the life of the salmon trollers at sea.  LIFE ON THE BOARDWALK chronicles and displays the time spent in town!

This post invites you to take a stroll on the boardwalks of Pelican and meet the fisherfolk!  A few of them were born there, others arrived from diverse backgrounds, and for a variety reasons. Some didn’t even last a season while others stayed for a lifetime.

Travel is significant to how they evaluate the quality of their lives. Cathy & David Zeigler-Ross love to travel and they choose their destinations thoughtfully and plan the journey carefully.  With tickets purchased, lodging reserved, and bags packed, their hearts beat a little faster as they anticipate the day the plane lifts them into the sky and on their way to Paris.

‘MY CHILD’S RECOVERY FROM A FALL” A Poem By Mike Cohen

Mike Cohen, a poet, story
teller, and novelist returns to the NESTER with a new poem, My Child’s Recovery From a Fall, previously unpublished.  It fascinates us that each of Mike’s  poems is dramatically different from the others and this poem is no exception.  My Child’s Recovery From a Fall dwells on what might happen when a child lets go of the parent’s hand and climbs on monkey bars, first rides a bike without training wheels or dashes off on her own into the unknown. There’s always risk involved.  Most of the writing about children’s accidents centers on the child’s experience and what is the appropriate response from the parent. Less is written about what the parent is experiencing during the event.

We resonate with this poem and so will you!

Mike’s poems, short stories and novel excerpts have appeared in several literary magazines. In addition to writing award winning short stories selected for publication, his stories have been anthologized and reviewed. Mike also authored a coming of age, legal thriller, RIVERTOWN HEROES, set in the Northwest.
