THE "EARLY" VEGETABLE GARDEN

Once upon a time Tim and I decided to start a vegetable garden at our country home. We knew that the clay soil would be a challenge, and neighbor gardeners suggested raised beds filled with a good planting mix. We followed their advice and enjoyed our first “crops”

OUR "SHADY GROVE" COUNTRY HOME

When we decided to remove our home’s low deck railings, Tim had the idea to use them as fencing for the vegetable garden area, with our bird house collection topping the posts. A very “country”look!

7 FOOT FENCE DEFINES VEGETABLE & FLOWER GARDEN

As time passed, more deer discovered Ponderosa and enjoyed garden snacks.  Tim found a plan for a “deerproof” 7 foot fence and our neighbor Jeff built it for us. The fence was both practical and beautiful, attracting compliments from neighbors but keeping out deer!

We created mixd plantings of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. We laid pavers for a small patio with space for two chairs.

BLENDED VEGETABLE AND FLOWER VARIETIES

Our fenced garden plantings changed over time, but we had consistent success with lettuce, rhubarb, tomatoes, roses, and even orchids!

TONI ADDS VARIETIES TO FENCED GARDEN

When our son Paul and daughter-in-law Toni moved from Sitka, Alaska. to Ponderosa, Toni continued to cultivate beds of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. She grew many plants from seeds and early starts  from a small new green house. She experimented with new varieties, but kept many older plantings.

Tim’s and my garden story continues, with new twists and turns ahead as we have passed the gardener role to the next generation. We are grateful to be part of this transition time!
