MAUI CHRISTMAS MEMORIES – PHOTOS BY KATHY BIEVER & LORELIE OLSON – TEXT BY LORELIE OLSON

For more than twenty years our Christmas celebrations were interspersed with holiday trips to Maui.  We dedicate this post to our good friends Keith and Kathy Biever, who were our gracious hosts at their Kihei Surfside condo.

Our first days were a whirl of familiar preparation activities!  After arrival,Keith and I went shopping for food, drinks, and holiday decorations.

We enjoyed delicious food  at home in the condo and at restaurants.  Kathy’s grilled cheese sandwiches, rolls, pies, and cookies were much appreciated, Keith frequently made his famous spaghetti sauce, and Lorelie prepared salads and tropical fruits.  Tim often treated us to lunches and dinners at favorite spots.  Our most memorable meal was at Sarento’s on the Beach for Tim’s 70th birthday celebration dinner, but we also enjoyed resort luaus, happy hours and dinners at Five Palms next door and lunches at Casenovas, Maui Onion, and Tommy Bahama’s.

The most strenuous activities were Tim’s long distance swims and his Haleakala hikes with son Paul and led by Kathy.  Other outdoor activities included beach hikes, walking the park trails and roads to Kihei or Wailea, swimming in pool or ocean, and snorkeling at Ulua Beach.

We enjoyed outings to island gardens, arboretums, and the Maui Ocean Center.  One memorable time was our car trip on the famous “Road to Hana”, with Keith as chauffeur and guide.

Our many visits to arts centers, galleries, and gift shops resulted in purchases that stuffed our Christmas stockings, which we opened after outdoor Christmas Eve services at Keawala’i Church.

We experienced a wide variety of activities with friends and family: beach times, sightseeing, parties, doing puzzles, reading for our “book club,” hula lessons, and daily sunset happy hours.

We hope you have vicariously enjoyed these highlights of our Christmas times on Maui. We wish you a Merry Christmas: “Mele Kalikimaka”!
